Donald Trump has declared victory over Democratic rival, Kamala Harris, after being projected to win the key battleground states of Pennsylvania, North Carolina and Georgia.
The Republican Party is also projected to win back control of the Senate.
In a somewhat rambling speech, Trump said he was going to make the economy great again, the country great again, the environment great again. He didn’t provide any real details.
“This is a moment like nobody’s ever seen before. Frankly, this was, I believe, the greatest political movement of all time. There’s never been anything like this in this country,” the Republican candidate told supporters in Florida who had gathered for his campaign’s watch party.
“And now it’s going to reach a new level of importance because we’re going to help our country heal,” he said. “We have a country that needs help and it needs help very badly. We’re going to fix our borders, we’re going to fix everything about our country. We made history for a reason tonight.”
Congratulations began to come in although the counting of votes is continuing and Harris has also yet to concede.
French President Emmanuel Macron said he was “ready to work together as we have done for four years… with respect and ambition, for more peace and prosperity”.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu congratulated Trump “on history’s greatest comeback”.
Austria Chancellor Karl Nehammer said he looks forward to “further expanding and strengthening our transatlantic relations to successfully address global challenges together”.
Polls in the November 5 election have closed across the country, with voting going largely smoothly.
To win the presidency, a candidate needs at least 270 Electoral votes. Neither Trump nor Harris has secured the 270 votes needed to win the White House.
