An Italian who’d spent the evening celebrating New Year’s Eve in the Romanian capital  has been fined by police after he climbed over the fence of Bucharest’s Museum of Art Collections.

The 26-year-old Italian was reported to be intoxicated when he scaled the museum fence on Calea Victoriei in downtown Bucharest early Saturday.

A police officer who was on duty at the museum spotted the Naples-born national, used a spray to immobilize him, and called the police.

The incident occurred at about 2am and the man was drunk, police said. He’d been reveling at a nearby restaurant, he said.

He was fined 500 lei (about 100 euros) for trespassing.

The incident comes about a week after an Irishman broke into Romania’s Parliament building. He told police he thought it was his hotel.

The museum is housed in the 19th century Romanit Palace. It was first opened in 1978 and has 44 permanent collections of mainly 19th and 20th century Romanian art which were donated to the state.

It exhibits works by the founders of modern paintings such as Theodor Aman, Nicolaescu Grigorescu,  Nicolae Tonitza, Theodor Pallady and Camil Ressu.

It also has exhibits of European and Japanese graphics, French furniture, Oriental rugs and Transylvanian icons.
