Eastern Europe farmers demand an end to carrying the weight of Ukraine

Farmers’ representatives from Romania, Poland, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic and Slovakia have gathered in Poland to sign the Solidarity Pact of the farmers, demanding the immediate interdiction of imports of agricultural produce and food produce from Ukraine in the signatory countries.

Romania was represented as signatory party by Alina Cretu, executive manager and Tiberiu Stan, vice chairman of FAPPR (the Forum of farmers and professional processors of Romania).

According to the joint declaration the farmers’ associations have stated that for the protection of national producers, consumers, food safety and raw materials for food production, including risks and speculative handling of products of plant and animal origin, there is a dire need for sufficient financial reserves under the EU crisis reserve fund for countries in the vicinity of Ukraine.

In addition to the immediate ban on imports of agricultural products and foodstuffs from Ukraine to the signatory countries, the agriculturists have also requested direct intervention on the limitation of quantities transited in the signatory countries for agricultural products from Ukraine.

At the same time, there is needed urgent intervention for the acquisition of the cereals existing stocks by the EU with simultaneous growth of the acquisition prices to 300 euro per ton.

The representatives of the farmers closed the request with firm appeal to the European authorities to respond to these complaints hastily, in order to avoid a joint protest in Brussels.
