Eleven newborn babies test positive for COVID-19 at Romanian hospital

A Romanian hospital says that eleven newborns have tested positive for the new coronavirus. Their mothers are not infected with the virus.

The Odobescu maternity wing at the Timisoara Municipal Hospital on Monday said all but one of the babies had left the hospital with their mothers, pressalert.ro reported.

The maternity wing in the southwestern city was quarantined after 12 healthcare staff tested sportive for COVID-19

The nurses remain quarantined at the facility.

Pressalert.ro reported that the babies likely contracted the virus from the nursing staff. The babies are due to be admitted to another hospital in the city that is treating COVID-19 patients, the site reported.

Health Minister Nelu Tataru on Monday asked public health authorities in the city to carry out an urgent verification of the facility.

Some 49 women who have given birth since April 1 and their babies have been tested for COVID-19.

Hundreds of Romanian heath workers have been infected with the virus since the outbreak.

Romania on Monday reported more than 4,000 cases of coronavirus, with 168 deaths.
