Florida state rep. Joe Casello passes away while in office

Florida Democrat Joe Casello died in office as lawmaker, at the age of 73.

He suffered a heart attack, state House officials inform.

Casello was a firefighter in Massachusetts for 30 years before going into Florida politics in 2018.

He served as a Boynton Beach city commissioner before becoming a state lawmaker, and had announced his intention to run for a seat on the Palm Beach County Commission in 2026.

He was surrounded by his girlfriend and family when his heart gave way on Friday.

This means that he did not literally die in the office, but while holding the position of state representative.

As per Florida law, its governor Ron DeSantis must call forth a special election when an unexpected death opens a legislative seat.
