Football trip ends in tragedy as 7 PAOK supporters die in Romania crash

The Greek football community was plunged into mourning after 7 PAOK Thessaloniki supporters died when their bus crashed in Romania.

Three others were injured after their minibus crashed into an oncoming truck in western Romania on Tuesday.

Romanian police confirmed that minibus carrying 10 men was traveling from Greece to France when it collided head on with truck in Timis County, in western Romania.

The group was on a football related trip when the crash occurred.

Romanian police said the minibus driver, a 29 year-old man crossed into the opposite lane before hitting the truck. The impact caused severe damage to the vehicle.

Romanian emergency services confirmed that six fans died at the scene while another later succumbed to his injuries. Three injured passengers were taken to hospital for treatment.

The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation, with authorities examining road conditions and the circumstances of the driver at the time of the crash.

One of the survivors, however, told Greek outlet ertnews.gr that the steering wheel blocked during a manuever to overtake another vehicle and the minibus slammed straight into an oncoming truck.

 

Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis expressed deep shock after learning of the incident. In a message shared on Facebook he said he was “deeply saddened” by the loss of seven young Greek citizens.

He offered condolences to the victims families and to the PAOK club community. The team is set to face Lyon on Thursday in Europa League.
