France to deploy fighter aircraft in Romania

A squadron of Rafale fighters will be sent to perform air policing missions in the Romanian airspace, France’s Defense Minister Sébastien Lecornu said.

Lecornu visited Romania on Thursday where he met Romanian Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca.

The two officials discussed the Romanian-French Strategic Partnership and deterrence and defense elements on the NATO agenda.

They also discussed the need for security in the Black Sea region in the wake of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, according to a Romanian government press release.

France’s heads the NATO battlegroup deployed in Romania  which has strengthened the countries’ partnership in recent months.

The Romanian prime minister thanked the French minister for transferring military personnel and combat equipment to Romania, including armored infantry vehicles, tanks, and the MAMBA anti-aircraft system.
