Bucharest mayor Gabriela Firea who is under fire for failing to tackle air pollution and traffic congestion came to a city hall meeting Wednesday wearing a surgical mask and a doctor’s coat.
But Gabriela Firea, who is running for a second term as mayor in elections this summer, said she was wearing medical attire because she was protecting herself “against government viruses.”
Her aides also donned medical attire to underline the point. Some held banners reading “Viruses at the government.”
Firea is a leading member of the Social Democratic Party, a rival of the governing Liberal Party.

Firea used the occasion Wednesday to focus on the flu theme, claiming the government had underreported cases of flu in the capital.
She said some 1,905 cases had been registered at schools in the capital, saying that the National Institute for Public Health had only reported 92 cases.
“The government isn’t taking this problem seriously, it’s twiddling its thumbs, more interested in privatizing the health system.”
