Romania’s President Nicusor Dan has ”strongly” condemned hostile cyber activities reportedly carried out by groups linked to Russia’s Federal Security Service that have targeted EU countries for years.
The attacks have “targeted member states of the European Union, NATO allies, and their partners, including our country,”’ the Romanian leader said on X.
Together with the ”European Union and NATO, we send a clear message: such attacks, which target public institutions, critical infrastructure, and sensitive information, are unacceptable.”
He went on to say that the ongoing assaults were “part of a broader hybrid campaign aimed at undermining the stability of our democracies, fueling divisions in society and among allies, and testing the cohesion of the European Union and NATO.”
“Romania will continue to act, together with its allies and partners, to strengthen cybersecurity and defend the values, security, and unity of the Euro-Atlantic community.

On Monday, the European Union imposed sanctions on Russian military intelligence officers, hackers and private companies, claiming they conducted a yearslong cyber espionage campaign to undermine the bloc.
Nine people and four entities accused were accused of links to an online spying network that the EU said has targeted governments and carried out sabotage operations against critical infrastructure like heating and power plants since 2010.
The European Council said in a statement that those targeted “contribute to Russia’s efforts to destabilize the EU, its member states and international partners.” It said the espionage and attacks have taken place in at least nine countries.
France, Germany, Poland, Cyprus, the Netherlands, Austria, Slovakia, Romania and Finland, “among others” have been targeted, the statement said.
