Romania’s Astra Film Festival (AFF) is a festival dedicated exclusively to documentaries which has taken place since 1993 in Sibiu.

AFF has now announced its official selection for the 2025, which includes over 70 documentaries.

65 of these will be premieres, hailing from all over the globe.

The festival will take place from October 17 to 26, thus spanning two weekends and nine days.

Competition categories, of which there are five, include: Romania, Eastern Europe, Emerging Voices, DocSchool — a new category, DocShorts.

Nine general themes have also been established: dictatorship, the far-right, fake news, gender roles, and the crises of modern society.

Importantly, for those who wish to attend but are unable to, two-thirds of the lineup will be uploaded for streaming across Romania for two weeks after the Awards Gala.

The full lineup can be read on festival’s official website.

As the festival is included in the European Film Academy’s shortlist, organizors have the right to submit direct nominations to the European Film Awards.
