Italian embassy in Romania says it is  ‘confident’ about police inquiry into ‘assault’ of Rai Uno journalist

Italy’s embassy in Romania on Friday said it appreciated efforts by Romanian authorities to get to the bottom of an incident involving a Romanian senator and a Rai Uno journalist who says she was assaulted and kept captive in the politician’s office.

The case was thrust into the international spotlight after Lucia Goracci and her crew were kept in police custody on December 10 for eight hours. They were released after the ambassador intervened. She has filed charges against the police.

Senator Diana Sosoaca called police to her private office after an interview about her anti-vaccine views degenerated into an altercation.

President Klaus Iohannis and Prime Minister Nicolae Ciuca have called the incident “regrettable.” They have urged for a „thorough” inquiry.

On Friday, the Italian embassy said it was “confident that Romanian authorities would shine light on what happened,” News.ro reported.

”The Italian embassy in Romania expresses its appreciation for statements made by Romanian officials at the highest level which condemned the attack on the journalist and her crew. The defense of the role of the media and press freedom and the right to information is also appreciated,” the statement said.

Police have opened three separate criminal cases into the incident. The senator’s husband Silvestru Sosoaca is accused of shoving and biting the journalist. He is also charged with attacking a police officer.

Ms Goracci who works for state broadcaster Rai Uno went to interview Ms Sosoaca about her anti-vaccination views.

The journalists were on assignment in Romania doing a report about low vaccination rates and the anti-vaccination movement.
