The chief of the opposition Communist Party in Moldova’s breakaway Transnistria region has been found dead at his home.

Oleg Horjan, 47, was killed at home on July 16, the leader of the Russian Communist Party, Gennady Zyuganov, told a news conference in Moscow on Monday.

Radio Free Europe reported that they had been informed by a colleague that Horjan was found dead at home near the separatist capital of Tiraspol with multiple stab wounds. He was found by his wife in a room next to a „safe that was wide open and empty.”  Police were alerted and have begun a criminal investigation.

Police, however, said he was shot dead. Horjan was released from prison in December 2022 after spending 4 1/2 years in a Transnistria prison.

He told RFE/RL at the time that he was imprisoned for „violent actions” and had been on a hunger strike for 90 days.

Transnistria broke away from Moldova in 1990.
