New coronavirus cases surge past 300 again in Romania

The number of new coronavirus cases climbed to 321 on Wednesday, a fresh leap after a slight drop this week.

The National Public Health Institute said that almost 11,700 tests had been carried out in the last 24 hours, giving an infection rate of 2.75%, a similar ratio to most of the past ten days.

Some 16 patients succumbed to the virus in the past day. They also had preexisting health conditions. The death count is 1,555.

The cumulative total of coronavirus cases since  the pandemic began is 24, 826.

Most cases, almost 4,000 occurred in the northeastern county of Suceava where an outbreak at the county hospital quickly spread to the wider population

Bucharest, the capital, has had more than 2,800 cases. There has been a recent rise in infections in the county of Brasov, one of the top tourist attractions, which reopened on May 15 to outside visitors after two months of strict lockdown.

There are 186 in intensive care, fewer than previous days.

Some 17,400 patients have recovered from the virus.

There are currently 1,200 people in institutionalized quarantine to stop the spread of the highly contagious virus and another 72,400 people in self isolation at home.

Some 651,000 tests have been carried out since the pandemic began.
