Former Liberal  leader Crin Antonescu says he is reconsidering running for the Romanian presidency, citing a lack of support from the ruling coalition that formerly  said it would endorse him as a joint candidate.

The development adds another layer of political uncertainty to turmoil which began when Romania canceled presidential elections on Dec. 6 two days before the poll, citing Russian interference.

In an interview on Saturday, Mr. Antonescu, 65, criticized politicians from the ruling parties who recently suggested that the choice of a joint candidate has not yet been finalized.

He told  Digi 24 that an agreement for him to run as a joint candidate would remain suspended until coalition leaders clarify their position.

Romania is scheduled to re-run presidential elections in the Spring after the government formally sets a date.

Romania’s ruling coalition may end up rallying behind Bucharest mayor Nicușor Dan who has already announced he will run for president as an independent.
