Unlike most countries, Romania has a flat tax rate of 10%, with certain exceptions.

But the singular feature has been under serious public debate in recent months.

However, Nicolae Ciuca – the president of the ruling Liberal Party and a candidate for Romania’s upcoming presidential elections – shot down the possibility of Romania switching to a progressive taxation system anytime soon.

He cited two arguments: that the flat tax rate is appropriate to Romania’s business milieu, and that the Romanian state is not logistically equipped for such a shift anyway.

The standard corporate income tax rate is also flat, at 16%.
