Romania carries out record number of COVID-19 tests, as virus cases rise to 12,000

Romanian authorities shave carried out a record number of COVID-19 tests in a day, as cases rose to near 12,000 on Wednesday.

The Strategic Communication Group said 16,700 tests had been carried out in the last 24 hours, the largest number ever.

The total number of tests conducted since the virus outbreak in March is just short of 167,000. Authorities have stepped up the number of tests in the past week.

Authorities said 362 new cases were reported since Tuesday.

The virus has caused 675 deaths, authorities said.

There are currently 247 patients being treated in intensive care.

Since the virus outbreak, 3,569 people have recovered from the disease.

There are 12,000 people in institutionalized quarantine while and 22,700 people are in self-isolation at home.
