Romania found a drone crater near the border with Ukraine on Thursday after an overnight Russian attack on Ukrainian port infrastructure, the defense ministry said.

The ministry said the crater_ some 1.5 meters deep_ was caused by the „uncontrolled crash of a drone used in the attack on Ukrainian port infrastructure.”

The drone fell in an unpopulated area near the village of Grindu, the statement said.

Romanian F-16 fighter jets and German Eurofighter Typhoon planes carried out surveillance of Romania’s air space after the attack, the ministry said.

There was no immediate comment from Russia about Romania’s statement.

Russia began escalating attacks on Ukrainian ports across the Danube River from NATO member Romania after it pulled out of a deal allowing the export of Ukrainian grain via the Sea Black in July. Since then, there have been occasional reports of drone debris  landing in Romania.

NATO and Romanian officials say there is no evidence of any deliberate attacks on Romania.
