More people die on the roads in Romania than any other country in the European Union with 77 deaths per million inhabitants last year, new figures show.
The statistic released by the European Commission on Tuesday which puts Romania again at the top of dangerous driving in Europe shows a slight decline of 4% from the previous year and 21% compared to 2019, according to preliminary figures.
Romania’s road fatalities are way above the EU average of 44 road deaths per million inhabitants last year.
Some 19,800 people were killed in road accidents in the EU in 2024, 600 fewer, or a slight decrease of 3% compared to 2023.
The safest countries in terms of road safety were Sweden, Malta and Denmark which had mortality rates of 20, 21 and 24 deaths per million inhabitants.
Bulgaria is close to Romania with 74 deaths per million inhabitants, the highest in the bloc.
