Romania will introduce green license plates for zero-emission cars, the environment ministry said.

The plates are for vehicles which run on battery and fuel cell electric cars.

Owners of zero-emission vehicles can get the plates starting July 1 and new registrations will automatically be given the green license plates.

“By clearly and visibly identifying clean vehicles in traffic, we create the framework for providing facilities to those who use them: whether we are talking about free parking, access to low-emission areas, or tax cuts,” Environment Minister Tánczos Barna was quoted as saying.

Romania hasn’t yet introduced EV privileges , but there is a scrapping scheme designed to encourage the  uptake of lower emission vehicles.

Last year, the Romanian government increased the ‘Rabla Plus’ budget to 82 million euros, It offers grants to purchase electric and hybrid cars.

Electric cars are granted a subsidy of 10,000 euros and plug-in hybrids 4,500 euros under the program.

Electric cars make up just one percent of cars in Romania last year.

The green license plate has been adopted by other countries including Poland, the UK and Ukraine.

The Romanian design features a green font and green edges.
