Romania is trending as tourist destination

The secret is out. If traditional tourism underperforms, then savvy travelers are tapping into Romania’s gorgeous landscapes and timeless villages.

The country is listed as fifth on Airbnb’s list of 20 trending destinations for 2020 based on year-over-year growth in bookings, the accommodation booking company announced.

Bookings in Romania through the platform have increased by almost 300%, the ranking reveals. Romania is the only destination in Eastern Europe included on the list.

It come just below Bilbao in Spain and Sunbury, Victoria, Australia.

The site says” Romania, with its pristine hills and ancient rural villages, is the perfect destination for anyone looking for something off-the-beaten-track. The country has some of the best preserved virgin forests in Europe and, according to the 2018 Environmental Performance Index, ranks 15th globally when it comes to ecosystem vitality.”

The site features horseback riding in Sibiu, Transylvanian villages by bike, various castles and a salt mine in Turda.

Airbnb is the world’s biggest accommodation-sharing site which was set up in San Francisco in 2009. In the first year it helped 21,000 guests find a place to stay, while last year it provided a roof for six million travelers. It currently lists 800,000 properties in 34,000 cities across 90 different countries.

It makes it money by charging commission from hosts and guests.
