Romania posts record 104 coronavirus-related deaths

Romania has reported the highest number of Covid-19 deaths in a single day since the start of pandemic.

The Strategic Communication Group said Tuesday that 104 patients died in the past 24 hours.

The deaths came on a day when 4,724 new coronavirus cases were posted, bringing the total to 217,216.

Some 31,828 tests were carried out in the past 24 hours giving a ‘positive infection rate’ of 14.84%, a sharp drop from previous days.

Bucharest had 623 cases, more than anywhere else, while three regions reported more than 200 infections. Another thirteen counties posted more than 100 infections.

Five cities and counties were in the ‘red scenario’ of more than 3 cases per 1,000 residents. Apart from Bucharest, the counties of Alba, Cluj, Harghita, Salaj, and Timis which are all in the Transylvania and western Banat region.

Authorities have implemented more restrictions including compulsory face masks in all public places, with some exceptions. Cinemas, theaters, bars and restaurants with indoor seating and gambling shops have all been shut.

Fifty0six men and 48 women died. Five were in their 40s, ten in their 50s, 25 in the their 60s. 34 in the 70-79 age group and 30 were older than 80.

All but four of the people who died had underlying health conditions such as cancer, diabetes or kidney disease.

There were 824 patients being treated in intensive care units and 10,760 hospital beds occupied by Covid-19 patients.
