Romania posts single-day record of 4,016 new coronavirus cases

Romania on Wednesday posted a single-day record of 4,016 new Covid-19 cases. Some 66 patients with the virus died in the past 24 hours.

The Strategic Communication Group said a record 686 patients with SARS-CoV-2 were being treated in intensive care units. Patients with the virus needing intensive care treatment has steadily risen since Oct. 1.

Romania’s government is to meet later in the day to decide what new restrictions should be implemented as cases soared in the last fortnight.

A government group has recommended a blanket ban on all weddings, baptisms and other parties across Romania regardless of whether they are held inside or outdoors.

The also wants masks to be compulsory in places where there are more than three coronavirus is cases per 1,000 inhabitants. Bucharest posted 669 new cases on Wednesday, the highest single-day figure yet, but there are fewer then three cases per 1,000 people.

Authorities carried out 31,310 tests in the past day, the highest number of single-day tests, giving a ‘positivity rate’ of 12.82% higher than previous weekdays.

In the past day, 38 men and 24 women succumbed to the virus. One patient was in their 30s, another was in their 40s, eight were in their 50s, 14 in their 60s and the rest were older than 70.

All the people that died had pre-existent health conditions such as diabetes, cancer or heart disease.

There are about 9,400 hospital beds being used for Covid-19 patients including patients in intensive care units.

There are some 15,800 people infected with the new coronavirus in self-isolation and 9,000 in institutionalized isolation.
