Romania praised for ‘efforts to counter Russian aggression’ in US Congress resolution

The U.S. Congress has passed a resolution praising Romania for “advancing security and democratic principles” in Eastern Europe.

The resolution was passed on Tuesday to mark 25 years of the US-Romanian Strategic Partnership which was signed in Bucharest in July 1997 during a visit by former U.S. President Bill Clinton.

In the “past 25 years, Romania has advanced security and democratic principles in Central and Eastern Europe and the Black Sea region, and has actively contributed, as a member of NATO and the European Union to forge a strong transatlantic partnership, including as one of the top troop contributors to NATO’s almost 2-decade mission in Afghanistan,” the resolution said.

It noted that Romania was a “founding member of the Bucharest Nine regional NATO cooperation format “aimed at strengthening defense and deterrence on the eastern flank of the alliance.”

It said Romania had shown “commitment to transatlantic common defense includes hosting the Aegis Ashore Missile Defense System, which protects NATO members from ballistic
missile threats” and had played:

“a pivotal role in NATO’s efforts to counter Russian aggression, consistently meeting or exceeding NATO’s 2 percent of GDP defense spending target, and offering to host one of NATO’s 4 new multi-national battlegroups.”

It hailed “Romania’s efforts and commitment to support Ukraine in the face of Russia’s unprovoked and illegal military invasion” which  deserves “full recognition.”including offering support to more than one million Ukrainians who fled the invasion.

Romania will continue to host rotational brigade combat teams from the United States to enhance the collective deterrent capabilities of the NATO alliance.
