Romania records more than 1,000 Covid-19 cases for seventh day, 33 deaths

Romania recorded 1,151 coronavirus cases in the past day pushing the total to over 47,000 on Tuesday, authorities said.

The Strategic Communication Group said 33 patients died in the past 24 hours, about a 40% increase from Monday. One was in their 20s, and another was in their 40s. Thirteen were in their 60s. All but two of the fatalities were people with pre-existent health conditions.

Some 21,455 tests were carried out giving an infection rate of 5.44% of those tested, a steep drop from Monday when more than 14% of tests came out positive.

It was the seventh day in a row that more than 1,000 cases were reported in a single day.

There were 357 patients being treated in intensive care units, slightly more than Monday. Almost 7,000 patients are hospitalized for the virus.

There were 97 new cases in the stricken county of Arges which has seen a surge in infections after a number of outbreaks. There were also 97 new cases in Bucharest, less than Monday.

The southwestern county of Mehedinti saw 71 new cases, a surge of almost 12% in a single day.  Last week there was an outbreak at a company that manufactures railway carriages.

More than 26,100 patients have recovered, and 3,716 patients with no symptoms were discharged from hospital.

More than 1.1 million tests have been carried out since the pandemic began.

There are currently 2,254 people isolating at home and just over 5,000 people in  institutionalized isolation.

Some 14,000 people who are considered at risk are quarantined at home, with  15 in institutionalized quarantine.
