Romania has recorded a record-high of 40,018 Covid-19 cases on Tuesday with a rise in hospital admissions.

The new record came after a surge in cases in recent weeks.

Romania is the European Union’s second-least vaccinated country after Bulgaria. Just  41% of the population is fully inoculated, a reflection of mistrust in state authorities and disinformation about the virus and vaccine.

On Tuesday, there were 937 Covid-19 patients in intensive care units across the country of which 790 were unvaccinated, according to official data.

Hospitalizations have risen but are still far below the fourth wave of the pandemic in October.

Ninety-five people died of the virus within the last 24 hours. Some 75 had been jabbed and 22 hadn’t.  All the unvaccinated people had underlying health conditions.

Starting Tuesday, Romania will allow travelers to enter the country with proof of vaccine or proof of recovery from the virus, or if they provide a negative test result.

The incidence rate rose to 14.25 per 1,000 inhabitants nationally. The capital had 21.65 cases per 1,000 on Tuesday.

Covid-19 vaccination certificates valid for only 9 months from Feb. 1
