The number of new coronavirus cases dropped on Tuesday, amid fears that authorities could lose control of the virus.

The Strategic Communication Group said there were 214 new cases confirmed following 9,000 tests. That was less than Monday when there were 246 cases and also fewer than previous days when more than 300 new cases were confirmed daily.

A total of 2.39% of Tuesday’s tests were positive, less than half the ratio on Monday, but a similar figure to recent days.

Following a recent spike in cases, Health Minister Nelu Tataru warned Monday that cases could double or even triple if people didn’t comply with social distancing and wearing face coverings.

Sixteen people succumbed to the virus in the past 24 hours, bringing the death count to 1,539.

Romania has confirmed 24,505 cases  since the pandemic begun.

In a sign of the gravity of the virus, the number off patients in intensive care rose to 200 on Tuesday.

Still, almost 17,200 patients have recovered from the disease and sent home from hospital.

There are currently 1,241 people in institutionalized quarantine, and another 70,800 isolating at home under medical supervision.

Since the pandemic began, Romania has conducted more than 639,000 tests.
