Romania reports new record of coronavirus cases, Covid-19 deaths in a single day

Romania has reported a record 1,378 new cases of coronavirus in the last 24 hours and the highest number of deaths in a single day.

The Strategic Communication Group said Friday that 50 patients had succumbed to the virus in the past 24 hours and 446 patients were being treated in intensive care units.

Friday’s infections lift the total number of cases to 59,273 since the pandemic reached Romania in late February.

A total of 31 men and 19 women died in the past day after contracting the virus. Men are more vulnerable to the disease.

Four patients were in their 40s, four in their 50s, 11 in their 60s, 17 in their 70s and 14 patients were older than 80. They all had pre-existent health conditions such as cancer, diabetes, obesity or heart problems.

There are 7,800 patients being treated in hospital for the virus, including those in ICU.

Bucharest had 199 new cases, more than any other place, and the  county of Prahova, where there are lots of tourist hotspots reported 110 new cases. The southern county of Arges which has seen a spike in recent weeks confirmed 96 new cases.

There are more than 30,000 people in quarantine or in self-isolation.

Some 29,300 patients have recovered and about 5,900 people with no symptoms have been given the all-clear/

The death toll stands at 2,616.

Some 1.34 million tests have been carried out including just under 24,000 in the past 24 hours.
