Romania reports record number of coronavirus cases and deaths

Romania on Thursday reported an all-time negative high of 4,902 cases of coronavirus in a single day and 98 Covid-19 related deaths.

The Strategic Communication Group said 778 patients with the virus were being treated in intensive care units, more than at any other time. Romania has a capacity of 1,000 beds in intensive care for Covid-19 patients.

Thursday’s count came after the previous record of 4,848 cases on Wednesday. It is the fifth time when there have been more than 4,00 cases in a single day.

Bucharest posted a sharp rise in cases with 804 new infections in the past day.

There were 338 new cases in the northwest Cluj region, the southwest Timis county reported 205 cases.

Ilfov, which is next to the capital posted 206 cases, a rise of more than 4% in a single day. asi in northeast Romania which has seen a surge in cases in recent weeks added 311 cases.

Romania has reported a cumulative total of 196,004 cases of which 141,089 patients have recovered.

In the last 24 hours, 55 men and 43 women succumbed to the virus.All but three of the people who died had underlying health conditions such as diabetes, cancer or heart disease.

About 34,500 tests were carried out in the last day, giving a ‘positivity rate’ of 14.22% higher than the past two days.

There are currently 23,500 people in self-isolation and about 9,800 in institutionalized isolation.
