Romania reports record number of daily Covid-19 cases

Romania added more than 1,300 new coronavirus cases in the past day, setting a new record for daily cases since the start of the pandemic.

The Strategic Communication Group said there were 1,356 new cases, with 5.79% of the people tested for the virus coming up positive, slightly more than the previous day’s percentage.

The total coronavirus cases in the country climbed to 49,591 on Thursday.

Thirty-five patients died in the past 24 hours. They included two people in their 20s, and one in their 40s. Twelve were in their 60s and another dozen were older than 80. They all had underlying health conditions.

The death toll since the start of the pandemic went up to 2,304.

The number of patients receiving treatment in intensive care units rose to 402, from 377 the previous day before.

Overall, more than 7,200 coronavirus patients are currently hospitalized.

There were a record 223 new cases in the capital, a 4% rise in a single day, and 101 cases in the southern county of Arges, of the most stricken counties.

The counties of Prahova in southern Romania and Timis, in western Romania, both reported more than 70 new cases, amid scattered outbreaks in the areas.

Romanian authorities have imposed or will shortly enforce new rules to slow the spread of the virus. In hard-hit areas, people will have to wear face masks in crowded outdoor places and bars and restaurants will have to close by 11 pm.

Some  23,346 tests were performed in the past 24 hours, of which about 9,800 were on request.

Some 26,609 patients have recovered since the outbreak began in late February.
