Romanian President Nicușor Dan says he will participate next week as an observer in the first meeting of US President Donald Trump’s Board of Peace.

Dan said he was accepting an invitation from Trump, in a message on Facebook on Sunday after days of internal consultations.
“Next week I will take part in the first meeting of the Board of Peace in Washington, responding to the invitation addressed by the President of the United States of America, Donald Trump,” Dan wrote on X, after having recently said that his country was still considering whether to join the body, of which Trump is the chairman.

He  says he aims is to reaffirm Romania’s support for international peace efforts and its willingness to participate in the reconstruction process in the Gaza Strip.

He referred to a resolution initiated by the United States and adopted by the UN Security Council in November.

Romania is not a member of Trump’s Board of Peace and Dan explained that the country received an invitation a week ago, but he said he wants to clarify with the US before making a decision on how the charter of the Board of Peace could be changed to align with Romania’s other international commitments.

Trump’s brainchild, the Board of Peace was officially launched by the US president last month at the World Economic Forum in Davos. From the European Union, only Bulgaria and Hungary are members.

Many European countries – including Germany – see the Board of Peace as a competitor to the United Nations and have therefore stayed away from its founding.

The controversial body is set to meet for the first time on Thursday in Washington.

Italy also intends to participate as an observer in the Board of Peace in the future.
