Romanian capital sees a record high 352 coronavirus cases in a single day

Coronavirus cases surged in the Romanian capital on Saturday, with authorities reporting a record 352 new cases in a single day.

Overall, there were 1,269 cases in Romania in the past 24 hours, with Bucharest overwhelmingly having more than other places. About 22,400 tests were carried out, of which 5.67% tested positive.

Some 38 patients succumbed to the virus in Romania  in the past day, the Strategic Communication Group said.

Intensive care units were treating 476 Covid-19 patients, fewer than Friday. There are 7,237 patients being treated hospitalized.

The fatalities were 28 men and 10 women, and all but three had underlying health conditions which made them more vulnerable to the virus.

Cancer sufferers, people with diabetes and heart and kidney disease are likely to develop a more serious form of the virus.

One person in their 30s died, two in their 40s, three in their 50s, a dozen patients in their 60s, and twenty over 70.

The number of new cases in Bucharest was way higher than the previous high record on Aug. 29 when there were 241. Saturday’s total came after relatively few new infections were reported earlier this week. It was not immediately clear whether the two were connected.

Other counties that had a large number of new cases were Iasi in northeast Romania which reported 60 infections and Bacau in the east which had  50. Five counties had 7 or fewer cases.

There are currently 9,700 Covid-19 patients in self-isolation at home and about 6,000 in institutionalized isolation.

Some 35,200 are quarantining at home after they came into contact with coronavirus outbreaks.
