The Romanian Cultural Institute has awarded Bruno Mazzoni and Steinar Lone this year’s joint award for the best translation of a book from Romanian into a foreign language.
The price is awarded at the International Festival of Literature and Translation (FILIT) from Iasi, and is given to a book from a series of titles translated and published with the support of the RCI through the Translation and Publication Support program.
Bruno Mazzoni received it for the Italian translation of poetry collection Variațiuni pe o temă dată by Ana Blandiana, published with Donzelli Editore in Italy, and Steinar Lone for the Norwegian translation of the novel Solenoid by Mircea Cărtărescu with Solum Bokvennen in Norway.
Both Ana Blandiana and Mircea Cărtărescu have received a significant number of prestigious international prizes after having their books translated in various languages in recent years, with Cărtărescu being included on the list for Nobel Prize awardees in literature.
Bruno Mazzoni is one of the biggest supporters of Romanian literature in Italy, as a professor of Romanian language and literature at the Department of Philology, Literature and Linguistics of the University of Pisa, and the translator of several Romanian authors. He has received multiple prizes for his work.
Meanwhile, Steinar Lone is one of the most renowned Norwegian translators from Romanian, French and Italian. He was decorated, in November 2007, with the Order of Cultural Merit by the President of Romania for his work promoting Romanian literature in Norway and was awarded the Prize for the best literary translation in 2008, awarded by the Norwegian Critics Union, for his translation of Mircea Cărtărescu, one of the many authors he translates.
