Romanian man who parked car on the beach lands record fine

Romania is notorious for the unusual, dangerous and illegal places motorists sometimes  park their cars.

But a motorist from Bucharest has gone one step further, and parked his car smack in the middle of the beach during the holiday season.

Police from the Black Sea town of Mangalia were called to the beach in the resort of Saturn on Thursday, after the man parked his Volkswagen there, disturbing tourists.

Constanta police spokeswoman Mihaela-Andreea Iliescu said the 43-year-old man was fined 10,000 lei, more than 2,000 euros, Adevarul reported.

Police say the motorist has already clocked up a number of traffic offenses.

On June 13, police stopped him  in the Black Sea resort of Vama Veche, near the border with Bulgaria. They said his license had been suspended for driving under the influence. He was later stopped and tested positive for cocaine.

Vehicles are banned from tourist beaches, except from those with a specific purpose, such as vehicles used for beach maintenance.

Fines range from 10,000 to 20,000 lei under the 2006 law.
