Romanian police chiefs fired after they failed to test motorist with drugs on him who later killed 2

Police chiefs have been fired after their traffic police released a teen driver who had drugs in his possession without testing him.  The 19-year-old motorist later crashed into a group of pedestrians, killing two and injuring three others.

The driver, Vlad Pascu, hit a group of people in the seaside village of 2 Mai in southeastern Romania and fled the scene.

Police stopped him in the neighboring village of Vama Veche, he tested positive for cocaine, amphetamine, and methamphetamine.

It emerged that he had been stopped by police earlier who found drugs in his car, but hadn’t stopped him or tested for drugs or alcohol.

The interior ministry on Wednesday evening announced the dismissal of the deputy chief of the Constanta County Police, the head of the Constanta Road Bureau, the head of the Mangalia Police and the head of the Vama Veche Police Bureau.

“Certain police officers have become moral accomplices to the crime,” Romanian Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu said.

He said he had asked Interior Minister Catalin Predoiu „to put things in order from top to bottom.”

Three other police officers are being investigated. Constanta County Police Chief Adrian Gluga remains in office.

Pascu is under investigation for manslaughter, fleeing the scene of an accident and driving a vehicle under the influence of alcohol or other substances.
