President Nicușor Dan has convened the country’s top defense body after a drone crashed and exploded on an apartment building in the eastern city of Galatti.

Top defense, intelligence and government officials will meet Friday morning at the presidential the Cotroceni Palace. It follows the overnight attack, the 28th violation of Romanian airspace since Russia invaded Ukraine in 2022, and the first time that people have been injured.

Two people were taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and a a fire broke out following the impact.

“I convened the meeting of the Supreme Council of National Defense…..to discuss the implications of the most serious incident that has affected the national territory since the beginning of the Russian Federation’s war of aggression against Ukraine,” a statement posted on social media said.

“We will order proportionate measures in relation to the Russian Federation,” in his first reaction to the incident.

Dan expressed solidarity with Galati residents affected by the incident and said it needed a “firm, coordinated response”.

“My thoughts are first of all to the injured people, their families and the residents who have experienced terrible moments in their own homes. I thank them for the calm with which they responded to this situation and I assure them of all the support of the Romanian state. The unprecedented nature of the event requires a firm, coordinated and commensurate response — at national, allied and international level.”
