Romania’s annual inflation slows to 10.6% in May

Romania’s consumer prices rose by 10.64% on the year in May, a drop from April when they increased 11.23%, the national statistical office said on Tuesday.

The average inflation rate over the last year was 14.7%, the office, INS, said in a statement.

Food prices soared by 18.73% year-on-year in May, while non-food prices went up 5.15%. The prices of services rose by 11.16%.

On May 10, Romania’s central bank, BNR, decided to keep its monetary policy rate unchanged at 7%.

High inflation has led to many people looking for extra earnings. Over 450,000 applications for part-time jobs were registered on eJobs in April, with half of the applicants aged from 18-24.

The numbers show that for many Romanians, their main job salary no longer covers the cost of living, so they are  looking for ways to earn extra money.
