Romania’s interim President Ilie Bolojan on Sunday said security guarantees granted to Ukraine cannot be ensured without US support, calling for talks to resume between Ukraine and the US to end the conflict in Ukraine.
Bolojan announced that NATO leaders meeting in London decided to maintain military support for Ukraine and to decide to increase defense budgets in the immediate future.
“Until fighting ends, and we have a a truce (we have to) maintain financial and military support for Ukraine We need to prepare European countries so that they assume a greater burden for peace in Europe and, in this regard, the increase of defense budgets will be considered in the near future,” Bolojan announced.
British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Sunday evening also insisted Europe must be ready to take on more burden as allies struggled to respond to US President Donald Trump’s bust-up with Volodymyr Zelensky in Washington.
Speaking after thecrisis summit in London, the Uk premier said the world was at a ‘crossroads in history’ and he wanted to forge a way forward that could be presented to the US.
Positioning himself as a bridge to the White House, Starmer said he still regarded America as a ‘reliable ally’. “We agree with the president on the urgent need for a durable peace… now we need to deliver together,” he said.
The comments came after European leaders spent hours trying to work out a strategy in response to blow up in the Oval Office on Friday night.
Romania’s interim leader said leaders agreed security guarantees that can be granted to Ukraine cannot be provided without US support.
“These security guarantees are not only for Ukraine, but practically for the entire Western Flank, from the Baltic to the Black Sea. In this regard, in the continuation of the transatlantic partnership, we will work on a common plan, so that the security guarantees are ensured both with a large involvement of European countries, but also based on a support that the United States could provide,” Bolojan said after the summit ended.
He said that in order to have a ceasefire, Ukraine and the United States needed to resume talks.
“The countries present have agreed that in the next stage they will have consultations and, by the end of next week, decisions will be taken in this regard,”Bolojan said.
