Romania’s oldest newspaper, “the Romanian Telegraph”, a religious publication on Tuesday celebrated its 170th birthday.

The Metropolitan of Transylvania, Laurenţiu Streza, said that from the get-go in  1853, the paper „fulfilled a holy calling, uttered through the deep … purpose of true work and service of … being a conscience of the  Orthodox Church and Transylvania,” Agerpres.ro reports.

”Telegraful Român” as it is known in Romanian, appeared for the first time on 3 January, 1853 as the newspaper of the Transylvanian Episcopate.  It has been published regularly since then even during the communist regime when religion was stifled.

It was initially published using the Cyrillic alphabet before switching to the Latin alphabet and covered a range of subjects from ecclesiatic texts to poetry and human interest stories.

Over the years, several well-known Romanian writers and poets wrote for the publication including Alexandru Macedonski, George Cosbuc, Ion Creanga, Alexandru Vlahuta, Vasile  Alecsandri and Ioan Slavici.

The current Metropolitan on Tuesday paid tribute to Metropolitan Andrei Şaguna, the founder of the “Romanian Telegraph”.

“We write from the church’s perspective, and cover important themes related to  the Christian life as well as  social issues which challenge society and the faithful; and all the human and existential problems. Our audience is young people and we want to make Christ  a friend who can be relied on. To those who feel alone or hopeless today, to those who are ‘uprooted’, to those without support or to those who are on their sick beds and suffering, the message is that Christ is with them, and that  we are with them, in solidarity and in  prayer to  comfort them”,  Biishop Streza said.
