Russia will continue to pose a threat to peace in Europe after possible ceasefire, states Polish Foreign Minister

Russia will remain a threat to peace in Europe even after a ceasefire in Ukraine, Polish Foreign Minister Zbigniew Rau said on Tuesday.

“It is wishful thinking that Russia would change its attitude immediately after a ceasefire has been agreed. It would remain a danger to peace in Europe”, Rau said at a joint news conference with his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock.

Rau said he feared a Russian invasion of Poland, as well as “the danger of an armed invasion of NATO’s eastern flank countries”.

Poland and Germany must work to ensure that Russia “suffers a strategic defeat and that its occupying forces leave Ukraine within the borders recognized by international law,” Rau added.

Baerbock also said that the Donetsk region belongs to Ukraine, saying: “Ukraine is a sovereign state within its borders and this is true for the time being, it has been true since 2014 and it is true for the future”.
