Romania has finally reached a moment that generations have dreamed of and for which many have worked hard.

Our full accession to the Schengen Area, on December 12, 2024, is proof that when we are united, nothing is impossible, Liberal Alexandru Muraru said in a message released Monday.

For years, Romania has proven that it deserves this place in the European family. We have protected our borders, strengthened our institutions and complied with all the commitments required by the European Union. And today, this effort has been rewarded. It is about what we are going to do so that this achievement is felt in the daily life of every Romanian, the National Liberal Party lawmaker said.

  • Our economy will grow: Romania’s GDP is expected to grow by 2% in the coming years.
  • Romanians will benefit from real freedom: 25 million annual crossings through the Schengen borders and 10 million cars with Romanian numbers will no longer spend tens of thousands of hours in queues.
  • We will fight Euroscepticism: Schengen access stops a major source of conspiracy theories for good. Nobody wants to harm us, and Romania is treated with the respect it has as  a first-rate European country.

But this moment is not just about what we achieved together. It is about what we are going to do so that this achievement is felt in the daily life of every Romanian.

  • We understand what this progress means when we cross borders without wasting hours at checkpoints, when we travel more easily and freely.
  • When Romanian companies are more competitive in Europe, when our exports reach international markets faster, we see how our economy grows.
  • And when foreign investment creates new jobs and opportunities, we know that this historic moment translates into real benefits for each of us.

It is the success of all those who believed that Romania can do more.

It is also a victory against the extremists who wanted to divert Romania from this path at any cost.

But I want to be clear: this is a victory, not the final destination.

This moment shows us what we can achieve when we look to the future with hope, but also with determination.

It shows us that we can become a country where well-being and respect come with responsibility.

Let’s build on this foundation to show Europe – and the world – that Romania is a reliable partner, a nation that knows how to dream, but also how to deliver.

The future is ours, let’s build it.
