Sir George Iacobescu, ex CEO of Canary Wharf Group, steps into presidential election to voice support for centrist Nicușor Dan

“If someone is a good mayor for Bucharest, he can be a good mayor for Romania as well. We can call him president,” Romanian-born British businessman told RFI Romania.

In rare public comments about Romanian politics, Iacobescu said he came to this decision after carefully studying the offers of Nicușor Dan and George Simion. 

George Iacobescu is probably the most respected Romanian in the UK. He was former chairman and chief executive officer (CEO) of Canary Wharf Group, the London-based owners and developers of the Canary Wharf estate in London Docklands.

Now 9, George Iacobescu emigrated from Romania almost half a century ago, first to Canada. He moved to London and was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II, the first Romanian-born national to receive the prestigious title.

Although he remained permanently in touch and committed to Romania, George Iacobescu has rarely taken positions in Romanian politics, until now.
