When a truck in São Paolo carrying blue dye rammed into a stationary pole, the substance spilled into the Brazilian city’s drainage system, which connects to the Jundiai River.
Local bodies are scrambling to control the damage on the surrounding ecosystem — particularly in rescuing animals that have touched the contaminated water.
Unfortunately, the dye fell into the river through a manhole.
The blue dye is made from an organic chemical based on acetic acid, used in packaging styrofoam and egg cartons.
The truck in question was carrying 1,000 litres of this dye.
Images on the internet have shown ducks wandering around dyed blue, but seemingly healthy and minding their own business.
Even a capybara ended up blue.
Some fish, unfortunately, have died, and were seen floating around in a lake.
Aquatic plants, fish, birds, amphibians, and smaller organisms are said to be at particular risk, particularly because of changes in the water’s delicate ph level.
