Meteorologists have issued a red alert for extreme heat with temperatures of over 40C expected to grip the Romanian capital and six counties.
The warning covers Tuesday through to Wednesday, with high humidity levels forecast for Dolj, Olt, Teleorman, Giurgiu, Călărași, Ilfov, and the capital city, Bucharest making the weather more uncomfortable.
Authorities have advises residents to avoid exposure to the sun during peak hours, while tropical nights will drop to a 22 to 22 Celsius bringing little relief.
Elsewhere, authorities issued an orange code for the southeastern counties of Ialomița and Constanța with temperatures expected to climb to reach 40 C.
The rest of southern and eastern Romania remains under a yellow alert, with highs ranging from 34 to 38 degrees Celsius and elevated heat stress.
Weather forecasters say the heatwave will last until the end of the weak, with the west, south, and parts of central Romania most affected.
