Truckers and farmers continue protests in Romania

Truckers and farmers continued vehicle protests near the Romanian capital on Monday for a sixth day over high prices of insurance, fuel, and fertilizers.

Negotiations between transporters union and the government over the weekend broke down after no agreement was reached.

Traffic was restricted on Monday morning in the first lane, in both directions, in Afumaţi near Bucharest, as trucks occupied the road.

Prime Minister Marcel Ciolacu has a meeting Monday morning with the ministers of interior, transport, agriculture and representatives of finance to discuss the situation.

Agriculture Minister Florin Barbu will meet representatives of farmers’ associations on Monday and Tuesday.

Protesters say some transport and agricultural companies are on the verge of bankruptcy.

Police stopped them on the main roads into Bucharest on Thursday, as the protesters threatened to blockade the city, in an effort to pressure the Romanian government.

Security forces denied protesters access to the capital because, they say, they lack the authorization to protest.

Hundreds of truckers from around Romania began a protest on January 10th,  setting out for Bucharest. They obstructed traffic by driving at slow speeds on Bucharest ringroad during the day to  draw attention to their demands.

The road to the Calafat customs post near the Bulgarian border was also blocked by dozens of tractors and trucks.
