VIDEO | Cold spell grips Romania. Snow in the mountains, gale force winds on Black Sea

Cold weather arrived in Romania, bringing rain, snow and high winds to much of the country over the weekend.

Thick snow blanketed the Bucegi Mountains on Saturday after  an unseasonal drop in temperatures, meteorologists said. Snowfall was accompanied by high winds.

High winds gusting up to 65 kilometers an hour whipped the Black Sea coast in eastern Romania from Constanta and farther north in the Danube port of Tulcea.

Temperatures fell in the capital and many restaurants and parks were unusually emopty, It was a likely mixture of the cool weather and a surge in Covid-19 cases that kept people away.

Mountain rescue workers posted images from the “Baba Mare” mountain at an altitude of 2,260 meters, reported.

It showed heavy snow and high winds.

Nowcasting weather service issued a gale warning for coastal areas on Saturday.

Romania goes into the ‘red zone’ as Covid-19 cases soar. One place still in ‘green’
