Yet another minor earthquake shakes Romania

A new wave of earthquakes occurred on Monday in Gorj County, informs the National Research-Development Institute for Earth Physics.

The most recent earthquake occurred on Monday, February 20, at 16:01 in Oltenia, Gorj, and had a magnitude of ml 2.1, at a depth of 12km.

The earthquake occurred near the following cities: 106km NW of Craiova, 111km SW of Sibiu, 144km W of Pitesti, 160km SE of Timisoara, 180km SE of Arad, 186km S of Cluj-Napoca, 205km W of Brasov, 209km E of Belgrade, 213km E of Zemun, 221km NE of Nis.

At 2:33 p.m., another aftershock was recorded with a magnitude of ml 2.3, at a depth of 13 km. It occurred near the following cities: 106km NW of Craiova, 108km SW of Sibiu, 141km W of Pitesti, 163km SE of Timisoara, 181km SE of Arad, 183km S of Cluj-Napoca, 202km W of Brasov, 213km E of Belgrade, 217km E of Zemun, 224km NE of Nis.

And at 13:23 an earthquake with a magnitude of ml 3.0 occurred at a depth of 7 km, near the following cities: 108 km NW of Craiova, 110 km SW of Sibiu, 144 km W of Pitesti, 160 km SE of Timisoara, 179 km SE of Arad, 183 km S of Cluj-Napoca, 204km W of Brasov, 210km E of Belgrade, 214km E of Zemun, 224km NE of Nis.

On Monday morning, at 07:46, a weak earthquake with a magnitude of ml 2.0 was recorded, at a depth of 16km, near the following cities: 108km NW of Craiova, 108km SW of Sibiu, 142km W of Pitesti, 161km SE of Timisoara, 180km SE of Arad, 183km S of Cluj-Napoca, 203km W of Brasov, 212km E of Belgrade, 216km E of Zemun, 224km NE of Nis.

From the moment of the earthquake with a magnitude of 5.7 on the Richter scale (ML), from February 14, 2023, until the date of the press release (Friday, n.r.), there were 3 significant aftershocks with a magnitude greater than 4 ML, respectively: 4.1 ML, on February 14, 2023, at 17:24:29, at a depth of 3.6 km; 4.2 ML on February 16, 2023, 03:07:06, at a depth of 10.8 km; 4.3 ML, on February 17, 2023, at 11:11:41, at a depth of 8.7 km.

„Not all of these earthquakes are felt by the population but, depending on the magnitude and depth of their production, can be felt in particular in the epicentral area. Seismic activity in the area is still intense and falls within the parameters estimated after a mainshock. This will continue for about a month, we expect to see a decrease in the frequency and magnitude of the aftershocks, but we do not exclude possible stronger aftershocks”, the Institute’s specialists stated.
