All of Romania moves into ‘the red zone’ after Covid cases soar

The whole of Romania has moved into the red zone after cases soared last week to more than 30,000 a day.

On Monday Romania posted over 20,000 new Covid-19 cases after a drop in testing. A massive 38% of tests came out positive.

The Covid-19 infection rate is now 13.3% nationwide. In the Romanian capital to shot up to three times which it was a fortnight ago, authorities said.

There were 18.05 infections per 1,000 inhabitants on Sunday, a jump from 16.07 the day before.

It was the highest rate since the beginning of the pandemic in the city of 2 million and three times what it was on Jan. 15.

The previous record was 16.54 on October 22, during the fourth wave when there were a high number of deaths as well as new cases.

In the suburbs, cases have soared even higher. Otopeni and Corbeanca which are directly north of the capital had 27.5 and 25.5 respectively.

The infection rate is calculated over a 14-day rolling period.

Romania has reported pandemic highs in recent days. There were more than 30,000 new infections four days in a row last week.

Sunday saw about 20,000 cases, but that wasn’t a true reflection as testing dips over the weekend.
