The former German Chancellor will launch the Romanian translation of her 2024 memoir
Former German Chancellor Angela Merkel will visit Bucharest to launch her memoir, Freedom: Memories 1954–2021, at the Romanian Athenaeum, the Litera Publishing House said.
The launch of the Romanian translation Libertate. Amintiri 1954–2021 will take place on September 1 at the Romanian Athenaeum.
The event will feature a public conversation between Angela Merkel and Emil Hurezeanu, Romania’s former Foreign Minister and ambassador to Germany and Austria, organizers announced.
Tickets are available through Eventbook with prices ranging from RON 99.99 for general admission, including a signed copy of the book, to RON 69.99 for general admission with an unsigned copy.
Freedom: Memories 1954–2021 was released internationally in 2024 in more than 30 countries.
Romania is among the select destinations personally chosen by Angela Merkel for a public appearance promoting the book, alongside major capitals such as Berlin, Washington, Budapest, and Athens, Litera Publishing House said.
Merkel, 72, was German Chancellor from 2005 to 2021, the first and only woman to hold the country’s highest political office. She is Germany’s third-longest serving chancellor after Otto von Bismark and Helmut Kohl.
The memoir is co-written with her longtime political adviser, Beate Baumann and reflects on Merkel’s life that was divided almost equally between two states and two political systems: 35 years in the German Democratic Republic (East Germany) and 35 years in reunified Germany.
