Romania on Friday recorded 1,520 new Covid-19 cases, a new high in almost four months as the more contagious delta variant takes hold.

Some 33 Covid patients died in the past 24 hours, the  Strategic Communication Group said. It was the highest number of deaths in a single day since June 5.

Sixteen men and 17 women succumbed to the virus. Except one,  they all had underlying health conditions. One was in their 40s and nine in their 50s; the rest over 60.

The number of patients requiring  intensive care treatment climbed to 345, about 7% more than the previous day. Two children are among the patients in intensive care.

There are about 2,772 patients who are hospitalized including 99 patients who are under 18.

Children are more vulnerable to the more transmissible delta mutation, and can develop severe forms of the virus.
