Coronavirus cases around 600 for second day in a row in Romania

Romania reported almost 600 new cases for the second day in a row on Friday, as the infection rate continued to spike.

The Strategic Communication Group said there were 592 new cases in the past 24 hours, following 14,680 tests, the second highest number ever conducted in a single day.

Some 4.03% of people tested were diagnosed with the virus. Friday’s high came after 614 cases were reported on Thursday, the highest ever figure for a single day.

The total number of cases rose to 31,381 authorities said.

Some 13 people succumbed to the virus in the past 24 hours, fewer than in previous days. The death toll now stands at 1,847.

There are 236 patients being treated in intensive-care units, more than in previous days.

More than 22,800 people have recovered from the virus.

Most infections were reported in Bucharest, which registered 69 new cases in the past day. The counties of Arges and Brasov continued to report the most new cases: with 56 and 54 respectively.
